Frozen pipes? SERVPRO of Manchester is READY TO HELP!

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

Frozen pipe covered in ice. SERVPRO of Manchester is Ready to help 7 Days a week 24 Hours a day.

You are not alone when it comes to the fight against freezing pipes and it is not always avoidable. As water begins to freeze it also expands and ultimately causes pipes to burst, leaving you with a flooded room. However, there may be some steps you can take in order to try to prevent this from happening to you!

It is important to understand that pipes freeze in the areas of your house that are most vulnerable to the cold where there is little to no insulation, such as the basement, attic and or garage (that's not to say it can't happen anywhere).

Here is a list of tips in trying to avoid pipes from freezing:

  • keep all areas of the house well heated as this is the biggest thing you can do to avoid pipes from bursting
  • if heating is not an option in places such as your garage, basement, attic, etc. then it is highly recommended to add insulation to these areas to keep the room temperature higher
  • check where water supply lines are in your house such as in the kitchen under the skin and in the bathrooms and make sure these areas are well insulated and kept above freezing temperatures
  • there are certain products you can have installed such as pipe sleeves or heat tape to help in trying to prevent from pipes freezing
  • if money is tight and you can't afford to insulate, newspaper can act as a decent insulator to help keep temperatures up in areas where pipes are exposed to the cold for long periods of time
  • consider relocating exposed pipes to more insulated areas
  • keep your garage doors shut in order to ensure it stays as warm as possible
  • in freezing weather you can let the water drip very slightly from the faucet, which can help prevent pipes from freezing temperature should never be left below 55 degrees Fahrenheit (although higher the better)

24 Hour emergency storm recovery with lightening bolts in the background Call SERVPRO of Manchester

The roots of the SERVPRO® Storm Response program date back to 1993 and make up a significant part of the SERVPRO® Story.

In 1992, SERVPRO® made a decision to begin taking the steps necessary to compete in the commercial market and catastrophic response (CAT). That same year, there was a large fire loss in Nashville. Several Owners agreed with corporate leadership and responded to clean the building; this was the first step on the road to commercial and CAT response. The following year, in 1993, there was a significant flooding event in the Mid-West. Corporate responded by sending several willing Franchise Owners to complete work in Des Moines, Kansas City, and ultimately ending in St. Louis. The nearly 40 Franchise Owners involved completed multiple projects, including the Spirit of St. Louis Airport.

The next two years saw several significant storm events. Tropical Storm Alberto dropped 24” of rain north of Albany, Georgia, causing the Flint River to flood; Storm Teams signed the Dougherty County School System billing out $1.3 million, among many other jobs. Hurricanes Opal and Erin struck and SERVPRO® Storm crews responded throughout the Gulf Coast region. This was the beginning of SERVPRO® Storm Response on a larger scale using centrally administered Franchises and crews. Many of the precedents set during these event are still part of the Storm Response Program today.

Storm remained an initiative led by the Storm Teams who are all Franchise Owners, using the processes learned on these early events. From 2002 to 2008, SERVPRO® Storm Teams responded to Iowa flooding and eight tropical storms and hurricanes, including Hurricane Katrina. A lot of mistakes were made; however, a lot of lessons were learned. Beginning in 2008, under the leadership of the Storm Teams, Commercial Large Loss Division (CLLD), and Executives, Storm Response was formalized into a cooperative program between the Storm Teams and the Corporate office.

From 2009 to 2011, the Storm Teams responded to 15 managed events. This experience continued to foster program improvements as Storm Leaders learned from successes and mistakes. At the end of 2011, SERVPRO® experienced the first of two “All-Call” events under the current Storm Response Program. The first was Hurricane Irene/Tropical Storm Lee, followed by SuperStorm Sandy in 2012. These two events significantly affected how Storm Response is managed, providing more valuable lessons. During this time, SERVPRO® also developed Storm Manager® to automate the process for dispatching and tracking leads. Since 2012, the introduction and integration of updated software tools for Storm and the introduction of DryBook™ for production have significantly improved the ability for SERVPRO® Storm Response to manage any event—whether it is a micro event or the next major hurricane.

Storm Response is an integral part of the SERVPRO® Story and differentiates our ability to execute from all other competitors in the industry. We will continue to make incremental improvements to support the SERVPRO® Brand.

STORM SAFETY

6/15/2022 (Permalink)

AFTER A FLOOD

SAFETY FIRST (For businesses and home owners)

  • Account that all employees or family members are safe by establishing evacuation plans in advance, identifying areas outside the building that are designated meeting places. Assign select individuals to keep a list of their assigned team’s names and contact numbers in order to account for their whereabouts.
  • If water enters the building and evacuation becomes impossible, move to an upper floor, and wait for rescuers.
  • While evacuating, avoid attempting to drive through floods or rising water, nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are auto-related.
  • Do not touch electrical equipment if you are wet or standing in water.
  • Do not walk through moving water.
  • Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged.
  • Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
  • Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.
  • Return only when authorities indicate it is safe.

Dreadful Mold

6/14/2022 (Permalink)

Mold growing in the corner on a blue wall Mold Can spread through a home or business in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Residential Fire Damage.

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

Livingroon burnt from fire cause from the fire place Residential Fire from a Home Fire Place.

The picture to the right shows a fire that happened in a residential home cause by the fire place.

SERVPRO of Manchester was called to the rescue.

We started by putting containment up around the rooms directly affected by the fire to keep any hazards from the rest of the home. We then safely and securely cleaned and packed all the customers belongings that were able to be saved in boxes and took inventory on items that could not be saved by making an itemized list of content and taking photos of each item to report back to the insurance company, Once that was completed we use chem sponges and dry sponged the entire house to eliminate all soot and smoke damage to rooms that were not directly affected by the fire. After everything was dry sponged we then wet washed walls, trim, windows etc to prep for any painting that might need to be done. Once the rooms that were directly affected by fire are cleared by the fire department we will start demo by removing all affected materials. After all affected materials have been removed and the room is cleaned of any debris from demo we will smoke seal all remaining material. Smoke Seal helps with the odor that fire and smoke leave behind so once the new drywall, flooring and woodwork get replaced you do not have that lingering smell left behind.

SERVPRO of Manchester worked on this loss day after day until everything was completed in order to get customers back in their homes as quickly as possible.

Different types of Fire Damage.

5/25/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Manchester will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Fire Damage Remediation.

5/23/2022 (Permalink)

Loss site on left source site where fire happened on the right The building to the left was a theater we cleaned from smoke and soot damage from a fire from the building next door.

Structure fires occur every 23 seconds according to the National Fire Protection Association.  If a fire happens in your home or your property, there are several things you need to know.  Fire Damage is the physical damage to property due to burning.  This does not always mean that your home or property has caught on fire. The Building or home next  yours or even a few house down may have caught fire and you are seeing soot and smoke damage throughout your home.  Fire and smoke damage can ruin walls, furniture, upholstery, clothing, electronics and other items.  SERVPRO of Manchester has all the knowledge and tools to remediate damage from fire, smoke, soot and ash.  SERVPRO of Manchester can get your clothing items cleaned your electronics like TVs, Ovens/Microwaves, DVD players and more.  We will also take inventory of any NON-Salvageable content that cannot be cleaned or that got to damaged and submit them to your insurance company.

This is a recent smoke and soot Damage SERVPRO of Manchester was called in to remediate.  This theater did not catch directly on fire but was heavily affected with smoke and soot damage. We ran air scrubbers throughout the theater to help with air quality while we were cleaning the entire structure with dry sponges, washed all windows and cleaned all floors.  We also upholstery cleaned all seats to the theater in little over a week as the theater was a business and still had to run shows and plays that tickets were already sold for.

SERVPRO of Manchester understands that some businesses can’t just close and we are happy to work around any scheduling needs your business will require to get any job completed.

What is the process to water damage?

5/18/2022 (Permalink)

Man and women holding blue buckets catching water. SERVPRO of Manchester is here to help!

Flooding in a home is not always the result of weather. Flooding and water damage can occur from multiple things. Emergencies that cause water damage may be a sewer backup, pipe burst, home appliances leaking, a hot water tank leaking and sump pump failure. The results of these are the beginning stages of water damage. Water in your home can ruin whatever is in its path such as furniture, flooring, drywall, and more. It doesn’t take long for standing water to cause issues. Water restoration is more than soaking up the water with towels and setting up a few fans for drying and is much more to it then what the eye can see.

Now you may be thinking, what if. What if my toilet started over flowing and flooded my bathroom? What is my dishwasher started leaking and ruined my hardwood floors in my kitchen? What my washing machine flooded my laundry room and water went into my finished basement affecting drywall on the ceiling? No one wants water damage to their home, business or property. Knowing the process that can get your home back to its original state can put a person’s mind at ease and SERVPRO of Manchester can and will do just that.

We understand that when you call us, you may be feeling confused and stressed. You need an expert to guide you through this crisis. SERVPRO of Manchester has the specific water damage training and experience to help you through this tough time

INITIAL CALL

When you call, we will ask several questions regarding your water damage emergency like your name and contact information, address, when and what caused the water damage and insurance information. These questions will help us determine what equipment and resources to bring, including how many trained SERVPRO Professionals may be needed.

INSPECTION

This process begins with a walk through of the property and water damage. This inspection allows us to determine the amount of damage there is and what it will take to bring the affected area back to its original state. We will take note on what is affected whether such as drywall, wood floors, carpet or concrete and then determine the amount of moisture in the affected material. We will also determine the water category. Was it clean water? This may include water from a supply line for a toilet or sink. Was it grey water, this type of water usually comes from a toilet overflow or a drain pipe backup.

DRYING PROCESS

The drying process is important and starting this process as soon as possible is imperative. Once we remove all standing water the drying process begins. Most material we can dry out with our commercial grade fans and dehumidifiers but there is also some instances where we will need to perform demo and remove drywall to expose and remove any possible insulation, remove flooring that act like vapor barriers that prohibit a subfloor from drying. Once the appropriate demo has been completed we let the equipment do the work. Our fans and dehumidifiers usually can dry out a structure in 2 – 3 days.

REBUILD

The rebuild process consists of replacing any and all material that was affected by the water damage. It can be as simple as replacing some trim or drywall and repainting the walls to all knew flooring and kitchen cabinets. SERVPRO of Manchester can help you from start to finish.

Cleaner Living

5/18/2022 (Permalink)

After of the filter to the machine that cleans air ducts This is an after photo of a filter when duct cleaning was completed.

Warmer months are finally here and many of us can’t wait to get outside and enjoy the fresh air.  Warmer months also mean it’s time to turn off the heat and turn on the cool air. Many people now a days have central AC in their homes and the cool air runs through the duct work and disperses through the house from the vents.

-When was the last time you had a duct cleaning done?  Indoor air quality is important and air ducts help regulate and move air throughout the home into each room.  These ducts are known to become dirty over time and procrastinating on cleaning them only makes matters worse. Clean air ducts lead to a cleaner living environment. Dirty ducts contain tiny dust particles and dirt that travel through the air and will eventually land of your surfaces of your home.  Think about it, are you okay with these contaminants landing on your kitchen table or even your bed? I didn’t think so.

These particles are microscopic and are blind to the naked eye.  This means you should clean your air ducts for the sake of a cleaner healthier living. Now what do I mean about healthier?

Specks of dust and dirt fill the air and make it more difficult to breathe. Dirty air leads to coughing and people with asthma or allergies are affected by unclean air. Okay, so you don’t have asthma but what about a guest you might have over don't you want to provide them with a comfortable environment?

Removing Odors – Duct cleanings also remove odors from your home.  We all have had to deal with that lingering odor that just doesn’t seem to disappear. Mildew is also found in your duct system. and has a very unpleasant smell to it. Along with smell it can restrict airflow throughout your home. Now the purpose of a duct system is to increase ventilation in your home right? Well if you have dirty ducts things like dirt and that is  preventing your ducts from doing their job.

Improving efficiency – When your air ducts are clean your AC/Furnace will work more efficiently.  When your ducts are clean the air can travel freely and the unit does not have to work as hard to cool or heat your home. This will also help with saving you money on utility bills.

BOTTOM LINE is dirty air ducts are bad for many reasons and leaving them unchecked will multiply those reasons and you will end up with problems in the future.

SERVPRO of Manchester Professionals routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC).  Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. This can in turn save you money and give you cleaner air to breathe.

However, duct cleaning is not always necessary. We will make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This can save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your system.

The benefits of servicing your HVAC unit include:

  • Helps to restore peak energy efficiency.
  • May help to eliminate offensive odors.
  • Helps reduce the potential for mold growth.

For more information on HVAC and air duct cleaning, call us today, 603-669-7733

Flooded Basement

12/22/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded Basement Don't let this happen to you. Follow these simple tips to prevent a flooded basement.

Swimming pools are great and all but not in your basement. Here at SERVPRO of Manchester-East we want to help you prevent this from happening.

So, here are a few tips on how to avoid a flooded basement and a big headache:

Check your water heater:

A water heater malfunction is one of the most common causes of a flooded basement. There's water everywhere, furniture is damaged, whatever personal belongings are down there are more than likely ruined and the list goes on.

Check your home's foundation for cracks:

If you find smaller cracks you can typically use calking to fix them, however, for any larger more extensive cracks you may want to enlist a professional to repair the damage.

Check your gutters:

Make sure your gutters are free of any debris. This is another common issue for water finding it's way into a basement. Clogged gutters cause water to overflow and not make it to the downspout which is what would carry the water away from your home. Instead the water starts to pool around your home and potentially finding its way into your basement.

Install a sump pump:

It’s a good idea to have a sump pump installed just in case. Be sure to keep it cleaned and maintained so that it continues to function properly.

For the last 50 years SERVPRO of Manchester has been the leading restoration company in the Manchester area. Working hard to extract, dry and restore water damages just like this.

Electric Heater Safety-Preventing a Fire

12/15/2021 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Fire damage due to electric heater.

It is that time of year again when we pull out our space/electric heaters for added warmth. What you see in this photo was caused directly from an electric heater on the second floor of an attached barn. Luckily no one was hurt and SERVPRO of Manchester was able to go in, demo, mitigate the water damage from putting out the fire and clean up any debris.

We want you to be happy and safe this winter so here are a few simple safety tips while using an electric heater:

1. Only plug these heaters directly into a wall outlet. Do NOT use: extension cords, surge protectors, plug timers or G.F.C.I outlets.

2. Keep the heater on the floor, preferably not a rugged floor. Putting it on any furniture, table or other fixture increases the risk of it falling over or overheating possibly causing a fire.

3. Make sure the heater is always 3 feet away from any flammable object. This includes furniture, papers, curtains, pillows/bedding and even paint that is potentially flammable.

4. Though this happens way too often; Do NOT leave your heater on when no one is home. Consider this especially if you have pets that could possibly knock the heater over causing it to catch fire while you are out.

Stay safe and Happy holidays!

Preventing Storm Damage to Your Home- Wind and Rain

12/8/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded Basement Don't let this be you. Check your sump pump, gutters and roof regularly.

You may not be able to prevent heavy rain and/or wind from hitting your area but you can prevent or at least limit the damage to your home or business. Here are a few easy tips to get you started:

1. Check your sump pump before each heavy rain season. Make sure it is in good working order. You may want the extra security and have a back up pump just incase.

2. Ensure your gutters are clear and that your downspouts flow away from your home or business. Water that builds up, unable to drain properly can back up and cause flooding, water damage, mold and an abundance of other damage to a home resulting in extra repair costs.

3. Check roof shingles and siding periodically. When there are strong winds it only needs a small opening underneath a shingle or piece of siding to enlarge the opening and potentially cause severe damage to your roof or siding. This also gives rain a chance to get in that could cause flooding,  water damage and mold.

4. Make sure any fencing around the home has strong footing to prevent strong winds from pulling it out and blowing it into your home causing damage to windows, siding or roof. Just as important is ensuring all outside furniture and lawn accessories are put away before storms to prevent them from blowing into your home also causing extra repair costs.

Preventing Winter Storm Damage-Frozen Pipes

12/8/2021 (Permalink)

Frozen Pipe Bursts Prevent this from happening to your pipes.

Winter is here in New Hampshire and SERVPRO of Manchester-East wants you to be prepared for bitter cold days/nights and winter storm weather. Two most common winter storm catastrophes are frozen pipes and collapsed roofs. Here are some easy tips/tricks to prevent these unwanted repair or restoration costs:

Preventing Frozen Pipes:

1. Let your water faucets drip during really low temperatures. This helps reduce the pressure between the faucet and the ice that builds resulting in less of a chance for the pipe to burst from the increased pressure.

2. Keep your thermostat at 65 degrees Fahrenheit during freezing temperatures.

3. Wrap any exposed pipes with insulation, towels with duct tape around it or electrical tape to keep them from freezing.

4. Be sure to shut off the water supply to any sprinkler or irrigation system prior to seasons with freezing temperatures. Make sure to have the pipes blown out to be sure any water left behind is gone.

Preventing a Collapsed Roof:

1. Check the integrity of your roof before snow season or a snow storm hits. If there are any loose shingles, holes or any other flaws to your roof be sure to fix or replace them to prevent further damage. When any of this goes unresolved the chance for leaks, water damage and even a collapsed roof increase significantly.

2. Be sure to have snow removed from your roof after any significant snow storm as well as periodically between smaller snow storms as the snow can continue to build over time resulting in a collapsed roof.

If disaster does strike and you need assistance with any restoration services SERVPRO of Manchester-East is here to help. Call us 24/7, 365 days/year at (603)669-7733

Knob and tube example Example of knob and tube

Two of the most frequent causes of fires we see is 1. Space heaters, and 2. Old antiquated electrical systems. For example knob and tube wire systems. Knob and tube wiring is defined as follows, “Knob and tube” is term that describes a system of residential wiring installed between 1900 and the 1940s in both city and country homes across North America. It was leading edge technology at the time, but is now regarded as too risky and dangerous to be insurable by some companies. The cost issued with changing out full wiring systems is extensive in most cases. We recommend consulting with a few local electricians and start developing a replacement game plan. In some cases this can be completed in stages. Again, nothing about this process is ideal but the effects from a fire can be far worse. Contact SERVPRO of Manchester with any of your restoration questions or needs!

Ground water extraction Starting the process of extraction

This summer has been a wet one to say the least! Increasing rain fall has put homeowners in a tough spot. Basements that have been dry for 20 plus years are flooding leaving homeowners to deal with the aftermath. Unfortunately, this isn’t the worst part. Typically, NH insurance policies are not set up with added flood insurance needed to protect homeowners with ground water claims. These ground water claims are rarely covered by insurance and turn in “self-pay” meaning the homeowner is responsible for payment. Payment for mitigation isn’t where that stops. Any contents affected by the water damage the homeowner would be responsible for as well. So, when you are talking with your agent ask these questions make sure your policy covers these items. If it doesn’t, we recommend that you do not store any valuable items or electronics in your basement. Anything permanently stored should also be blocked up at least 4”. As always call SERVPRO of Manchester with any questions or concerns!

Storm Damage Here to HELP!

You’re used to feeling the breeze when you step outside. So you may be wondering: are strong winds a big deal? The difference between mild and thunderstorm winds is significant. According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory, the destruction of thunderstorm gusts accounts for more than half of all structural damage in 48 states. It’s also more common than tornado damage.

Information on Wind Damage

Experts classify damaging winds as those that exceed 50-60 mph. These gusts are also known as “straight-line” winds to differentiate them from tornadic wind speeds. Most thunderstorm winds that result in structural damage are a result of outflow generated by a thunderstorm downdraft.

Learn how to protect your home from wind damage in today’s blog.

  1. Protect Your Doors and Windows

If you live in an area that frequently experiences high winds, you should install aluminum or steel storm shutters on your windows and doors. You will be able to close these shutters quickly in case of an emergency. One of the primary benefits of these shutters is that they prevent flying projectiles from breaking through your windows or denting your doors.

  1. Put Away Potential Projectiles

When strong gusts of wind hit, anything outdoors can become a projectile. Secure objects, such as patio furniture and grills, by bolting them down to your patio using straps and ground anchors. Alternatively, you can store them inside your shed or garage. Some homeowners store their shed inside their garage for added protection.

If you live in a mobile home, you’re more at risk of experiencing injuries. Even anchored mobile homes can suffer severe damage when winds gust over 100 mph. We recommend staying at a loved one’s house and taking your most important belongings in the event of a thunderstorm.

Oven fire This is a pre mitigation photo of a kitchen fire.

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. With this specific Fire loss we had to Demolish the entire first floor of this residence. When deciding how far to go with demolition we take multiple things into consideration. First and foremost, The health and safety of the residents is our priority. Our first step is inspection holes. We go through all affected areas and cut inspection holes large enough to pull samples of insulation and inspect all studs, sheathing and any internal electrical and plumbing components. Once we have validated the demolition of a room or specific structure we start looking at treatment. Treatment can include Deodorizing, O-Zone,Smoke sealing and more. Specific to this project we O-Zoned the entire house and smoke sealed all demolished structure. Any structure that did not need demolition was cleaned, When cleaning smoke affected structure typically the best method is a dry chemical sponge. Although some cases require alternate advanced cleaning methods.

SERVPRO of Manchester provides 50 years of experience which allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

SERVPRO of Manchester-East Knows application of Professional Products

Microbes always exist within our indoor environments. As part of the ecological system, microbes are necessary for life and cannot be completely eliminated from indoor environments by the application of chemical agents. Restoration vendors should not assume they are eliminating microbes from a structure by applying biocide or antimicrobial products.

Human health may be threatened when microbes amplify and grow in indoor environments. When water is present in an environment due to a water damage incident, microbes will grow given enough time and the proper conditions. If a Category 1 sanitary water situation is unmitigated for two to three days, microbes will likely amplify, increasing contamination of the structure and turning the Category 1 situation into a Category 2 or 3 situation. Building owners, occupants, and insurers should act quickly to prevent microbial contamination from becoming worse with passing time.

The longer water dwells in a structure, being absorbed by materials, the more damage it causes. Fast WATER DAMAGE RESTORATION MANUAL 7–4 response to water damages by SERVPRO of Manchester-East could save insurance companies and customers thousands of dollars on a claim, since timely mitigation reduces replacement costs. A quick response to a water damage is the most important course of action.

How SERVPROs Storm Response program was born?

6/26/2020 (Permalink)

-By BEN WILLIAMS disaster recovery manager

Storm Damage Mitigation Tips to review

5/15/2020 (Permalink)

Mitigation Tips: (Perform only when structure has been cleared as safe.)

  • Take the greatest caution while entering your home, and wear sturdy shoes and protective clothing when dealing with flooded areas. Wear protective clothing at all times.

  • Take photos or video to record conditions of collections and structure. Make sure images clearly record damage.

  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.

  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.

  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.

  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.

  • Remove any paintings, art objects, documents and other sensitive materials to a safe, dry place.

  • Place fans at 45-degree angles to walls and move large furniture away from walls to create the best air circulation.

  • Appoint a media liaison to report conditions and need for help/volunteers. You may have to limit access to collections.

  • Do not enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.
Do not attempt to operate any electrical equipment while standing in wet or damp locations.

  • Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors to cause staining.

  • Do not leave Oriental rugs or other colored rugs on wet wall-to-wall carpets to cause staining.

  • Do not use TVs or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.

  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

  • Do not turn on heat unless required for human comfort.

  • Do not move objects or collections without documenting their condition.

  • Throw away all foods – even canned goods – that have come into contact with flood waters.

  • If your home has a crawlspace, be aware excess moisture in this area can often foster mold growth.

What is Fire Restoration Cleaning?

5/5/2020 (Permalink)

Sponging Cleaning Suit damage

The fire damage restorer, the carpet cleaner, and the building maintenance janitor all perform cleaning. The restorer’s cleaning task, however, is slightly different from the task of the other two cleaning professionals. The restorer faces a unique situation—a building damaged by fire and smoke. The task is to remove the damage and return the building to the way it was before the fire. The industry describes this task as restoring the building to preloss condition. Cleaning to preloss condition means removing the effects of the fire damage. The restorer will remove smoke residues from interior and exterior surfaces of the building. The residues will often give off smoke odors, so the restorer must also deodorize to rid the building of the malodors. The fire possibly damaged some parts of the structure so badly they cannot be returned to preloss condition, so the restorer will dispose of structural items that are blistered by heat or charred by flame. Fire restoration cleaning is a unique form of cleaning in which the goal is returning items to a preloss condition. The restorer determines what items can be restored and what items must be replaced. The restorer identifies what items do not need any restoration and estimates the odds of restoring items that are questionable. The restorer will identify for the customer and insurance company any conditions that likely existed before the fire occurred, since fire restoration cleaning does not mean cleaning structure to a better condition than it was before the fire. Preexisting damages or conditions do not need to be addressed as part of fire restoration, but should be recognized and documented.

Residential property smoke damage

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke damage restoration

FLOOD TIPS AND ACTION STEPS

Even six inches of moving water can make you fall.
  • Use no open flames (there may be gas escaping from ruptured mains).
  • Avoid floodwaters. Water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline or raw sewage. Water may also be electrically charged. If the water has entered the structure through the flooding of a creek, stream or river, or if it has filtered through insulation during its intrusion, it is considered to be black water and could be hazardous to your health. Avoid contact with contaminated items as much as possible.
  • Stay out of any building if it is surrounded by floodwaters.
  • Listen for news reports to learn if the community’s water supply is safe to drink.
  • Return only when authorities indicate it is safe.

Steps in Controlling Microbial Growth

5/9/2019 (Permalink)

Microbial Growth based on moisture and temperature

The application of chemical agents should not be the restoration vendor’s primary method of controlling microbial growth. Since the presence of water promotes and sustains microbial growth, the primary steps in mitigation or remediation are (1) removing moisture by drying the environment and reducing humidity levels and (2) removing contaminated materials. Water damage restoration professionals should focus on fast drying of the structure (to reduce moisture levels) and not consider the application of chemical agents by themselves to be effective remediation of microbial contamination.

The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) points out that restorers are not effective if their only step is applying chemical agents (biocides) and they do not perform the more important steps of rapid drying and removal of contaminated materials:

“Effective remediation of water damaged or microbially contaminated buildings involves (a) the use of appropriate techniques to promote rapid drying, and (b) complete removal of contaminated materials rather than the application of biocides without these steps” (ACGIH Bioaerosals: Assessment and Control – publication #3180).

How SERVPRO’s Storm Response Program Was Born

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

Commercial large loss

-By BEN WILLIAMS disaster recovery manager

Do you know there are three different categories of water sources for water damage?

5/2/2019 (Permalink)

Category 1—Clean Water A building damaged by clean water or treated water is the least contaminated type of water damage. By definition, clean water is “clean” because it likely poses no substantial risk to human health. The source of clean water normally does not contain microbes in concentration or kind that would pose substantial health threats. For clean water to remain in the “clean” category, it must not come into contact with structure or materials that would result in harmful microbial contamination. Given enough time, clean water damages can produce reservoirs of microbes. The longer clean water is present in a structure, the more likely conditions will develop where microbes (such as bacteria and fungi) grow rapidly and attack human health. High humidity increases the concentrations of bacteria and fungi in the air. Warm temperatures allow microbe colonies to expand.

Category 2—Gray Water Gray water contains a significant level of contamination that could potentially threaten human health or cause discomfort. Clean water damages can develop higher levels of contamination and become gray water damages if not removed promptly. Over time, water becomes more contaminated with biological contamination, and the danger to human health increases. Spores from fungi and bacteria can be inhaled, causing allergies or disease. Water is also classified as gray water when contaminated with chemicals or other types of matter.

Category 3—Black Water Black water is the most contaminated type of water damage and, therefore, the most threatening to human health. Contaminants include not only human waste products, but also dangerous chemicals. Black water situations always contain pathogens, which are disease-causing agents, such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, and even parasites. Being exposed to microbes from black water can result in infectious diseases, allergies, and toxic poisoning. Viruses can grow and multiply only in living cells. Sewage contains hundreds of viruses that can be transmitted to humans by hands contacting the mouth, by inhaling airborne viruses, and by ingesting contaminated foods and liquids. Once infected, humans can suffer diarrhea, infections of the respiratory tract, eyes, stomach or intestines. Sewage contains the hepatitus A virus that causes inflammation of the liver. Parasites are organisms living on or in another organism. Sewage may contain parasites such as the tapeworm that lives in human intestines. The helminth worm, one of various parasites in sewage, can cause intestinal disease in humans. Bacteria found in sewage are extremely virulent and able to overcome our bodies’ defenses. Such bacteria as Salmonella and E. coli release poisonous toxins as their cells die and cause health problems like diarrhea and food poisoning. Unprotected restoration professionals and building residents are at risk since bacteria are dispersed into the air when sewage-contaminated materials, particularly carpet, are extracted.

Health Effects of Mold

5/2/2019 (Permalink)

Many different kinds of molds are present in buildings, and not all molds are as potentially
harmful as others. Molds affect different humans in different ways, so we all must be aware that
human health is at risk whenever molds grow excessively and multiply in a structure.

Chemical Compounds
Molds produce two types of chemical compounds to which occupants of water-damaged
buildings may be exposed:
• Mycotoxins are known to cause health problems in humans.
• Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds (mVOCs) result in unpleasant smells in our
homes.
Mycotoxins are poisonous substances. (“Myco” means fungus, so think of mycotoxins as “fungi
toxins.”) They are designed for chemical warfare against other organisms, even against other
types of molds. Living molds may produce mycotoxins to discourage other molds or bacteria
from growing in the same territory. Unfortunately, humans who inhale, ingest, or touch
mycotoxins may have a toxic reaction. Not all molds produce mycotoxins; furthermore, molds
that can produce mycotoxins do not produce them in all situations.
Microbial Volatile Organic Compounds are called mVOCs. mVOCs are produced by chemical
changes that take place during the mold life process. They are waste products given off by
actively growing molds. Some mVOCs produce musty and moldy odors. Research has not
proven that exposure to mVOCs causes health effects, but the odors from mVOCs may indicate a
level of mold contamination requiring remediation.
Research is ongoing as to how chemical compounds from mold relate to health effects in
humans. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has stated that more studies are needed to
understand the relation between mycotoxins and health. Also according to EPA, research in mVOCs is still in an early phase.2 Perhaps one of the most extensive studies on mold’s health
effects is the report by the Institute of Medicine.

How do we restore fire-damaged structure?

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

What Is Structure?

Structure is considered any part of a structure that is permanent. Items are called structure if they are permanently attached to a building. For example, the framework of a building including walls, ceilings, floors, attached floor coverings, doors, and windows are structure. Other items might be called structural components, such as cabinets, light fixtures, the heating and cooling system (HVAC), and bath fixtures. An easy way to distinguish structure from contents is to imagine turning the building upside down and shaking it; what falls out is contents and what remains is structure.

Methods of Structural Cleaning

Before cleaning structure, the restorer tests to determine the appropriate cleaning method. Appropriate means a method that will effectively remove the residues from the surface or material without damaging the surface or material itself. One goal of testing is to categorize materials as washable or non-washable: ? Washable: Materials that can be wet cleaned. Applying a waterbased cleaning product to the material will not damage the material. ? Non-washable: Materials that cannot be wet cleaned. Applying a water-based cleaning product to the material could result in additional damage, so the material must be cleaned by a dry cleaning method. The type of residues on a material may also determine the cleaning method. Oil- or grease-based residues will require a dry solvent cleaning agent, even though the material being cleaned would not be damaged by water-based products

What Is Fire Restoration Cleaning?

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

What does SERVPRO do after fire damage?

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

Mitigation Services—The goal of mitigation is to secure the structure and prevent further damage. Mitigation could include boarding up openings to secure the structure, winterizing the plumbing to prevent frozen pipes, and establishing a temporary source of electricity to the structure. Structures that are wet due to fire-fighting procedures will need emergency drying to prevent secondary water damage.

Structural Cleaning Services—Cleaning of a fire-damaged structure focuses on removing smoke residues from a building’s structural components and deodorizing odors given off by residues. The restorer and adjuster consult and advise the property owner on which structural components can be cleaned and which cannot be cleaned. Repair or replacement is needed for components that do not respond to cleaning.

Contents Cleaning Services—Personal property within a residence, office, or other building must be cleaned of smoke residues. In some fire situations, the contents can be cleaned on the jobsite. Other situations require contents to be packed and moved to a separate location for cleaning and storage. Pack-outs could occur because a building is not secure or is too damaged for on-site cleaning.

Specialty Restoration Services—Restorers of contents often subcontract specialty cleaning of certain contents: electronics cleaning, dry cleaning of clothing, furniture refinishing, and cleaning of expensive artwork.

Reconstruction Services—In some fire situations, structural components may be damaged to the point they cannot be restored to preloss condition. The work of reconstructing and repairing fire-damaged structural components may require different skills than those of standard home remodeling. Fire damage restorers typically perform cleaning services while licensed general contractors provide reconstruction services.

Do’s and Don’ts when you have fire damages in your property!

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

  •  Don’t attempt to wash any walls.
  •  Don’t attempt to clean carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting a professional restoration service.
  •  Do place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on carpet and upholstered furniture to limit the potential for further damage.
  •  Do limit the movement in the house to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  •  Do keep hands clean. Soot on hands can impregnate upholstery, walls, and woodwork, causing more damage.
  •  If electricity is off, do empty the freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open. This prevents the food from leaving odors in the appliance.
  •  Do clean and protect chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim, and appliances with a light coating of lubricant.
  •  Don’t operate any electrical appliances or equipment until they have been cleaned and checked. Smoke residues can be conductive.
  •  Don’t send clothing with smoke residues to dry cleaners not experienced in cleaning fire-damaged garments. Inexperienced efforts may result in setting residues or odors.
  •  Do wash plants on both sides of leaves with water.
  •  If the HVAC system was operating during the fire, do change the furnace filter and tape folded pieces of cheesecloth over air registers

How do we dry water damaged books and documents?

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Manchester-East can dry your important books and documents!

The focus in document and book drying is to stop further damage and dry items to the best possible condition. Five methods are used for document drying:

• air drying,

• dehumidification,

• freezer drying,

• vacuum freeze drying,

• vacuum thermal drying.

Selecting the appropriate method for document drying involves various considerations: type of water involved (clean, gray, black), extent of damage, time of exposure to moisture, funds available for recovery, and resources (personnel and equipment). Convey to the customer the expense involved in each drying option since document drying can be a costly service. Extended drying times are required for document restoration, often delaying return of the materials. The first step in drying is to store the wet documents and books in a freezer facility. Freezing documents as soon as possible, preferably within 24 hours of the loss, stops damage from continuing to get worse and allows time for you to determine what drying procedure will be effective. When the inventory and pack-out phase begins, the customer should be onsite to prioritize the material, identifying what is most important to dry. Make an inventory of documents being removed from a facility because lost articles can damage customer relationships. Maintain a log of the location of stored items, since someone inevitably will need to retrieve a document. The inventory log will help locate specific items quickly.

Worried about freezing pipes? Try these tips from SERVPRO Manchester-East

4/11/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Information

7/16/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot damage

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Manchester-East will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Why is everyone talking about mold?

6/27/2018 (Permalink)

In Manchester NH, mold can spread throughout your business or home in as little as 48 hours.
